Strictly Showbiz: GirlBoss Beauty Simplified
We all want to look a little fabulous sometimes. In fact, as a business owner, I think that making myself look a little glam gives me the confidence boost I need to close that deal, hit up that networking event or give that talk with ease!
I’m a big fan of keeping my regime simple, however. With rushing around and getting from A to B at the forefront of our minds, most of us don’t have time for luxurious skincare routines or hours spent applying make-up.
I recently caught up with the gorgeous Olivia Todd of @oliviatoddmakeup. Make-up artist to celebs, brides and showbiz, Olivia knows a thing or two about looking sassy when it’s crunch time.
I put my life-hack questions to her and dug a little deeper on what it takes to work in the industry.
How did you get into makeup artistry and what attracted you to running your own business?
I have always been drawn to art, fashion and beauty. Whilst working in magazines, I worked on a shoot where I met a makeup artist – until then, I hadn’t even considered it as a career option. As a huge believer in fate and what’s meant for you won’t go past you, the fact that a top makeup school was a stone’s throw from where I was living in London shouted to me that this was the path I was meant to take.
Following a career in Fashion Journalism, I started my training at London ‘s prestigious Glauca Rossi School Of Makeup, whose graduates include celebrity makeup artists such as Charlotte Tilbury, and Mary Wiles.
Very quickly, I found myself immersed in the crazy world of TV and fashion when I landed my first job on possibly the most glamorous TY show out there – Strictly Come Dancing. I haven’t really looked back since.
From a young age I have always been very entrepreneurial, thinking up new business ideas all the time; becoming a makeup artist was a great opportunity to set up my first business. Back then, I was and still am very excited by the variety of opportunities in makeup and beauty, it is such a multi-faceted career. I very much intend on launching my own product in the future and have many exciting plans for the business…watch this space!
Tell us about one of your favourite shoots/weddings/events, that you’ve worked on.
I really have had so many amazing opportunities so far within my career, it’s incredibly difficult to choose my all-time favourite project as each and every one has been so different. Experiencing all of the behind the scenes action for Strictly Come Dancing was incredible and very surreal. This was my first ever experience working closely with celebrities and I’ll never forget it.
I assisted celebrity makeup artist Karin Darnell on a Britain’s Got Talent TV commercial where Amanda Holden was turned into a punk rock Elizabeth I. I had to hand draw tattoos on Amanda’s hands and remember feeling worried about the outcome, but it all worked out great! It was a fantastic feeling to see the commercial on TV and to know I’d been a part of it. Karin has been a real inspiration to me, I really admire her work and believe working with her as her first assistant has influenced my style massively.
Being booked on a shoot abroad in Ibiza with Fabulous magazine has also been a highlight of my career. I was flown out for 3 days and we shot at 2 luxury villa locations, one was owned by a Russian millionaire and had its very own nightclub and wine cellar…it was a surreal experience and a taste of how the other half live! Also doing a shoot at the Moulin Rouge in Paris at the beginning of this year was pretty epic.
For busy mums, business owners etc. what are your biggest beauty tips?
If there is one thing you must do no matter how busy you are – never forget to cleanse and moisturise …a baby wipe is not sufficient, your skin needs a good cleanse to ensure not just makeup, but dirt and grime is removed too.
Always book in your beauty appointments in advance and get them all done in one day.
What are your top 5 products for time-stretched women?
A tan mask which you sleep in is amazing for giving you that beautiful radiant glow without having applied a single product the next morning. I use this every evening and switch between either Vita Liberata Self-tanning Night Mask or Tan Luxe drops which I simply mix with my own night cream. I swear by this for those of us who have early starts and are always on the run. You wake up with no dark circles or signs of tiredness in sight…despite how exhausted you might be feeling!
Eyes To Mesmerise
Rich, earthy terracotta tones suit every eye colour and are a great way to create a soft glam eye look perfect for day or can be amped up for night time if you smoke it up with kohl liner. I love to use a bronzer to contour both my cheekbones and eyes. It is a great 2 in 1 product which requires minimal effort or precision, just focus on the outer corners and wash over the lid and into the socket. I love a bronzer with no shimmer such as Hoola by Benefit. Not a fan of bronzer? An easy to blend shadow stick is also great for achieving a similar look, Nudestix Magnetic Eye Colour Pencil in shade Taupe is a great shade that suits all and has a lot of staying power.
Load on lots of mascara to create fuller looking lashes. You want something that will last all day and be smudge proof so I suggest waterproof formulas. Eyeko Beach Waterproof mascara is great as it’s a special formula that resists melting or smudging no matter how wet or hot it gets. The brush has densely packed bristles to ensure that it lengthens and coats each and every lash.
Manicure In A Bottle
For women in business I feel it is really important to look polished and well-groomed and I find that manicured nails always give this impression. No time to book in for a manicure? Rimmel London 60 second quick-dry polish is amazing as it really does create the look of a shellac manicure, keeping that gorgeous glossy shine and dries in just a minute.
When in a rush, often our hair suffers for it and can end up looking like a frizzy mess. It’s difficult to achieve a smooth, frizz-free look that a bouncy blow dry has when you’ve booked in with a hair professional. But, fear no more you can achieve salon worthy hair at home with minimal time or effort required. For healthy looking smooth and voluminous locks, Phillip Kingsley do a pre shampoo treatment for the hair which I love called Phillip Kingsley Elasticiser. A Heated brush such as the Babyliss Sheer Volume Ionic Rotating Heated Brush is great for smoothing any fly aways and creating soft bouncy curls like that of a full professional blow dry.
